Better Market Street Shutdown

To allow construction crews to work in the roadway and in the Muni trackway, we will be shutting down Market Street between 5th and 8th Streets from 5:00am on Saturday, October 14th through Saturday, October 28th. During this period, we'll be temporarily moving above-ground transit off Market Street between 3rd Street and 10th Street to avoid the construction zone. This will allow us to install underground electrical conduits for new traffic signals and construct new concrete crosswalks.

10/24 BUS REROUTE UPDATE: SFMTA has slightly altered the reroutes for the 9 and 9R buses in the outbound direction. Both lines will proceed down Market until 2nd Street, where they will begin their detour onto Mission Street. They will continue to re-join their normal routes at 11th Street and Mission Street.

Accessibility

All sidewalks on Market Street and adjacent streets will remain open to pedestrian traffic, and access to all businesses and buildings will be preserved. Underground BART and Muni Metro service will operate as usual, and all streets that cross this portion of Market Street will remain open to traffic in all usual directions. 

At various points throughout the shutdown, we will be working on each crosswalk that crosses Market Street. Once we know the exact dates of each crosswalk closure, this webpage will be updated accordingly. 

However, all of the crosswalks that cross the streets listed below will remain open throughout the shutdown period:

Transit Reroutes

As a result of the shutdown, the 5/5R Fulton, 6 Haight-Parnassus, 7 Haight-Noriega, 9/9R San Bruno, F Market and Wharves, L Taraval bus and N Judah OWL will be rerouted onto Mission Street and the 19 Polk, 21 Hayes and 31 Balboa will experience minor reroutes as well. The impacted routes will be rerouted in the following ways (please note that red lines indicate inbound routes and blue lines indicate outbound routes):

5 Fulton and 5R Fulton Rapid

The 5 Fulton and 5R Fulton Rapid inbound will be rerouted at McAllister and Hyde. They will turn right onto Hyde, cross Market Street at 8th Street, turn left onto Mission Street, left on 3rd Street and right onto Market Street, where they will complete their regular route. 

The 5 Fulton and 5R Fulton Rapid outbound will be rerouted at the Market Street and 4th Street intersection. They will turn left onto 4th Street, right onto Mission Street, right onto 7th Street, cross Market Street onto Charles J. Brenham and turn left onto McAllister where they will complete their regular routes. 

6 Haight-Parnassus and 7 Haight-Noriega

The 6 Haight-Parnassus and 7 Haight-Noriega inbound will be rerouted off Market Street at 10th Street. They will turn right onto 10th Street, turn left onto Mission Street, turn left onto 3rd Street and turn right onto Market Street, where they will complete their regular routes.

The 6 Haight-Parnassus and 7 Haight-Noriega outbound will be rerouted at the Market Street and 4th Street intersection. They will turn left onto 4th Street, right onto Mission Street, turn right onto 9th Street and left onto Market Street where they will complete their regular routes. 

9 San Bruno

The 9 San Bruno inbound will be rerouted off Market Street at 11th Street. It will turn right onto 11th Street, left onto Mission Street and left onto Steuart Street, where it will complete its regular route. 

The 9 San Bruno outbound will be rerouted at the Market Street and 2nd Street intersection. It will turn left onto 2nd Street, right onto Mission Street and left onto 11th Street, where it will complete its regular route. 

9R San Bruno Rapid

The 9R San Bruno Rapid inbound will be rerouted off Market Street at 11th Street. It will turn right onto 11th Street, left onto Mission Street and left on Main Street, ending at the intersection of Mission and Main. 

The 9R San Bruno Rapid outbound will be rerouted off Market Street at 2nd Street. It will progress down 2nd Street, turning right onto Mission Street and left onto 11th Street, where it will complete its regular route. 

F Market and Wharves

The entire F Market and Wharves line inbound will be replaced by bus service. It will proceed along Market Street from Castro to 10th Street, where it will be rerouted. It will turn right onto 10th Street, left onto Mission Street, left onto 3rd Street and right onto Market Street, where it will complete its regular route. 

The entire F Market and Wharves line outbound will be replaced by bus service. It will proceed along Market Street until 4th Street, where it will be rerouted. It will turn left onto 4th Street, right onto Mission Street, right onto 9th Street and left onto Market Street where it will complete its regular route. 

L Taraval Bus and L Taraval OWL 

19 Polk Inbound

The 19 Polk inbound will be rerouted at the Market Street and 7th Street intersection. It will cross Market Street to Charles J Brenham, turn left onto McAllister and right onto Larkin, where it will complete its regular route. 

21 Hayes Outbound

The 21 Hayes outbound will be rerouted at the Market Street, Grove Street and Hayes Street Intersection. It will cross Market Street at 8th Street, turn right onto Mission Street, turn right onto 9th Street, cross Market Street again and turn left onto Hayes Street, where it will complete its regular route. 

31 Balboa

On October 14th, October 15th, October 21st, October 22nd and October 28th, 2023 the 31 Balboa inbound will be rerouted at the Mason Street and Eddy Street intersection. It will turn right onto Mason Street and right on Turk Street, where it will complete its regular route. 

From October 16th through October 20th and October 23rd through October 27th, 2023 the 31 Balboa inbound will be rerouted at the 5th Street and Market Street intersection. It will cross Market Street onto Cyril Magnin, turn left onto Ellis Street, turn left onto Mason Street and turn right onto Turk Street, where it will complete its regular route. 

Bicycle Detour Routes

During the shutdown, bicycle traffic will be detoured off Market Street to ensure the safety of cyclists, our construction crews, and pedestrians. We have installed signage throughout the area to guide cyclists to the correct route. The specifics of these detours are as follows:

Eastbound bicycle traffic will be detoured off Market at 11th Street. Cyclists should turn right onto 11th Street, turn left off 11th Street onto Folsom, turn left off Folsom onto 3rd Street and turn right onto Market to proceed eastbound

Westbound bicycle traffic will be detoured off Market at Ellis Street. Cyclists should take a slight right turn onto Ellis Street, turn left onto Mason Street, turn right onto Turk Street, turn left onto Polk Street and turn right onto Market to proceed westbound.
