Traffic Signal Modifications Contract #36

San Francisco Public Works has partnered with Bay Area Light Works, Inc. to upgrade traffic signal infrastructure at 14 intersections across San Francisco. The scope of work will include excavation at some of the intersections, new traffic pole installation and electrical conduit work. Some intersections will also include curb ramp installation. Traffic signal modifications include new pedestrian countdown signals (PCS), new accessible pedestrian signals (APS), new higher-visibility 12-inch traffic signals on mast arms, new left turn signals, and replacement of old/damaged signal infrastructure.

The anticipated duration at each intersection is 1 month, however this may vary depending on the scope of work. Please note, there may be intermittent breaks in activities between the different phases of work.
Construction is scheduled to begin at the first intersection in April 2024 with completion anticipated at the last location in October 2025.
The intersections scheduled for improvements are listed below:

• 3rd Street at Carroll Avenue
• Essex Street at Harrison Street
• 20th Street at Dolores Street
• Bush Street at Taylor Street
• 17th Street at Folsom Street
• Pine Street at Taylor Street
• 10th Street at Bryant Street
• 7th Avenue at Kirkham Street
• 9th Street at Bryant Street
• Stanyan Street at Turk Blvd
• 9th Street at Brannan Street
• California Street at Presidio Avenue
• 4th Street at Howard Street
• Jones Street at Pine Street

Every year in San Francisco, about 30 people lose their lives and over 500 are severely injured while traveling on city streets. These deaths and injuries are unacceptable and preventable. In 2014, the City and County of San Francisco adopted Vision Zero as a policy, with the goal of building better and safer streets in San Francisco. These improvements will increase safety for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists, especially since 12 of the intersections listed above are within the Vision Zero High Injury Network.
