Second Street Improvements Project

 

The Second Street Improvement Project stretched from downtown San Francisco to SOMA. 

The project, located on Second Street between Market and King streets, included widened sidewalks between Harrison and Townsend streets; one-way cycle track bicycle facilities in the northbound and southbound directions; transit boarding islands at most transit stops along with planted medians; Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant curb ramps; new street trees; site furnishings (trash receptacles, bike racks, benches, and pedestrian lighting); upgrades to the traffic signal system; and a repaved street, curb-to-curb.

The majority of major construction activity on Second Street has been completed.

Construction Schedule

  • Segment 1 – Mid-January 2018 to April 2019 (Completed)
  • Segment 2 – October 2018 to early 2021 (Punch List)
  • Segment 3 – February 2019 to early 2021 (Punch List)
  • Segment 4 – November 2017 to March 2018 (Completed)
    *Work on the project will be completed on a segment by segment basis. The order in which segments will be worked on may not be sequential and some overlap may occur as crews finish up work in one segment and begin work in another. Please note that the construction schedule is subject to change due to rain, equipment breakdown and/or unforeseen field conditions. 
     


 

Construction Updates

01/22/21: Overhead utility undergrounding work is also still pending, and being managed directly by PG&E and property owners. On Monday, January 25, 2021, roadway crews will be on site to grind and repave portions of the cycle track and roadway on the block of Second Street between Bryant and Brannan streets to address roadway elevation issues. SFMTA paint shop crews are also in the process of applying final traffic striping, crosswalk and bike lane markings on Second Street, between Folsom and Townsend streets. Crews will continue to work on applying final traffic, crosswalk and bike lane markings over the coming weeks.

09/23/20: Upcoming Paving Activity: Crews will soon begin grinding and paving activity on the final block of the Second Street Improvements Project, between Harrison and Bryant streets. Roadway grinding activity will occur on Thursday 9/24 and on Friday, 9/25 in the bikeway/cycle track and roadway and will be followed by paving activity on Saturday 9/26. Some paving activity in the bikeway may occur sooner. Once paving activity is complete, crews will install temporary roadway striping. Final traffic striping will be applied by SFMTA paint shop crews once the roadway is inspected and approved. (Please note, there may be a slight pause of a few weeks to a few months after final paving activity before final traffic striping is applied depending on inspection, approval times and paint shop crew availability.)

The week of September 28, crews will continue with irrigation, tree and plant installation activity on Second Street, between King and Brannan streets. Crews will begin tree well granite paver installation work on Second Street, between Brannan and Harrison streets. The week of October 5, crews will continue with irrigation, tree and plant installation activity on Second Street, between King and Brannan streets. Crews will also continue tree well granite paver installation work on Second Street, between Brannan and Harrison streets. The week of October 12, crews will continue with irrigation, tree and plant installation activity on Second Street, between King and Brannan streets and will begin any remaining concrete flatwork, including punchlist repairs, ADA curb ramps, sidewalk restoration, etc. The week of October 19, crews will work to complete any remaining concrete flat work and prepare to demobilize any remaining materials and equipment from the project limits. 
 
The substantial completion date of the Second Street Improvements Project is anticipated to be October 22, 2020*
 

09/16/20:  The week of September 14, crews will work on concrete street base and grind and pave 2nd Street, between Brannan and Bryant streets, will also continue tree, plant and irrigation installation work between King and Brannan streets, install ADA curb ramps at the NE corner of 2nd and Harrison Street, work on bicycle track and irrigation work along the west side of 2nd Street between Stillman and Harrison and install a bus island at the SW corner of 2nd and Harrison Street and continue concrete street base work on 2nd between Bryant and Harrison streets. Crews also plan to work on Saturday, September 19 on 2nd Street, between Bryant and Harrison streets to continue concrete street base work. The week of September 21, crews will continue tree, plant and irrigation installation work between King and Brannan streets, will begin concrete street base work at the intersection of 2nd and Harrison, will begin ADA curb ramp work at the NW corner of 2nd and Harrison and will continue concrete street base work on 2nd Street between Bryant and Harrison. The week of September 28, crews will continue tree, plant and irrigation installation work between King and Brannan streets, will begin installation of tree well granite pavers on 2nd Street, between Brannan and Harrison, will continue concrete street base work on 2nd Street between Bryant and Harrison. The week of October 5, crews will continue tree, plant and irrigation installation work between King and Brannan streets, will continue installation of tree well granite pavers on 2nd Street, between Brannan and Harrison, and will begin grinding and paving work on 2nd Street between Bryant and Harrison streets.
